Gustav Klimt

Austria’s most famous painter visiting Lake Attersee

He loved this area: Attersee was a second home to the Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt. The poetically beautiful landscape inspired the master of the Viennese Art Nouveau exquisitely. Numerous paintings were created here – such as the portraits of Seeschloss Kammer in Schoerfling am Attersee. After his turbulent years in Vienna – Gustav Klimt was one of the founders of the Vienna Secession and, therefore, belonged to a young generation of artists, who were considered by conservative artists to by too radical – Gustav Klimt enjoyed spending his time at Lake Attersee.

A theme trail leading right around Lake Attersee reminds of the various stations of his work in Seewalchen, Litzlberg, Kammer and Weissenbach am Attersee. The most famous paintings from this era are “Unterach am Attersee” and “Weg im Park von Schloss Kammer” – one of the reasons that these paintings are so famous is that they were among the works that were stolen by the Nazis, and which were subsequently returned to their rightful owners by the Austrian government.
